The Hydra I is a small autonomous powered paraglider offered by Medusa, LLC for low altitude scouting, SAR and reconnaissance missions.
The Hydra powered paraglider design offers several advantages over traditional hard winged UAV platforms.
- High glide ratio (8:1) composite soft wing.
- 30+ lb payload
- 6+ hours endurance
- Simple, rugged design
- Compact size for transport and storage – fits in a backpack.
Hydra is simple to operate.
- One or Two person ground crew
- Can be launched from a small clearing, with no requirement for a paved runway
- The wing is unfurled and laid out behind the vehicle
- Take off occurs in approx 25-30 ft
- Easily launched from a surface vessel
The Hydra‘s low, slow flying characteristics make it an ideal platform for tactical ISR.
- Mission configurable payload bay for IMINT and/or SIGINT sensors
- Real-time full-motion video downlink
- Very small visual and acoustic footprint
- Hydra is capable of extremely slow flight and a very tight turn radius to simplify target tracking
Hydra can be remotely piloted (or made to operate fully autonomously) via a portable base station computer and advanced software which allows continuous tracking, mission and flight planning, video and data downlink.
- Mission critical features include up to 6 hours of flight in an EO/IR configuration
- Flight times vary based on payload weight and airspeed
- Multiple systems can be deployed in a swarm or fixed formation
